This course is ideal for anyone with a passion for jazz, ensemble playing, and improvisation. Whether you're a regular performer or simply jazz-curious, you'll find plenty to inspire and challenge you here. As long as you have a basic command of your instrument, no prior experience in jazz or improvisation is required.

Maybe you already play in a weekly big band or improvisation group - this is your chance to spend a full week immersed in the music, sharpening your skills, and gaining the confidence to take that next solo.

Throughout the week, we’ll rehearse and perform eight jazz arrangements (typically featuring 4–5 horn parts plus rhythm section). We’ll also explore practical approaches to improvising over each tune, with an emphasis on simplicity and playability. You’ll receive handouts with focused tips for each piece — but don’t worry, this isn’t a theory-heavy course! All arrangement parts will be emailed to you in advance as PDFs, giving you time to prepare. 

While improvisation is often seen as the heart of jazz, there’s equal satisfaction in playing well-structured ensemble arrangements with like-minded musicians. This course offers both — in a supportive and engaging setting.

The course is led by Mike Hall, a seasoned educator with decades of experience running jazz summer schools since 1987. As the former Co-ordinator of Jazz Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and long-time director of the RNCM Big Band, Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership. Combine that expertise with the unique setting of Le Pras - where you'll live, study, and dine in comfort - and you’ve got a truly memorable musical experience ahead!
