About the course

Have you ever been panicking inside when reading a big band chart, solo piece, playing in a show or other ensemble when you can see those dreaded chord symbols approaching? Don't worry, we've both been there too! It's a shame to have to tell your fellow musicians or the band leader that you can't improvise at that point and could someone else please take the solo! Or even not play a particular piece that you love because of a short improvisatory section?

Joining with other like-minded instrumentalists this course will help you avoid these feelings of trepidation, it will boost your confidence and improve your skills as you unlock the door to a whole new world of creativity!

With jazz curricula now on offer at many conservatoires/colleges and jazz now included in exam syllabi we appreciate there are many players and teachers who would welcome steps further into the genre, yet actively exploring the world of improvisation is routinely assumed to be rather daunting. Joining with other like minded musicians in the relaxing environment of the French countryside we will demystify the art of improvisation, introduce a range of jazz styles and concepts and look at how 'classical' technique and theory is applicable to improvisation.

Essentially we're talking about understanding how music works, which first & foremost involves listening, along with associated theory and being able to communicate via our chosen musical instrument. It's like trying to solve a puzzle, and once you delve into improvisation you may never want to stop!

Improvisation and jazz has become a big part of both our careers, yet apart from some big band experience in our youth we were both fundamentally classically trained, so it’s a challenge we can both relate to very much!

This course goes beyond the 6 day retreat as we will also provide you post-course follow up through the Music Retreats members area enabling you to keep in touch with us to assist your progress in the months beyond the course - included in the course fee!

Only 12 places available, so reserve yours now!

See you there!
